2nd International School on the Characterization of Organic Residues in Archaeological Materials
18/3/10 .- 2iscoram
2nd International School on the Characterization of Organic Residues in Archaeological Materials
2nd ISCORAM
Siena (Italy), June 14-18, 2010
Identification and characterization of organic residues in archaeological materials, such as ceramics, is a fascinating field of modern archaeology and archaeometry. These residues allow to obtain information on the original content of the materials, on their function and use. They can also give information on dietary and customs of people who used them. Actually several chemical methodologies can be used for the characterization of organic materials.
The 2nd ISCORAM school continues the series of the previous edition held in Grosseto (Italy).
The school is aimed at giving the background and the state-of-the-art on the characterization of organic residues in archaeological materials.
Different approaches, such as gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and spot tests will be presented together with a lot of examples of their applications in archaeology. Laboratory practice will have an important role in the school. Lecturers are qualified scientists worldwide.
Participants
2nd ISCORAM is addressed to graduate, Ph.D. and postgraduate students, researchers and professionals in the archaeological and chemical fields interested and/or committed in the characterization and investigation on archaeological materials.
Main Topics
- Sampling of archaeological materials
- Archaeological chemistry: organic markers
- Derivatization
- Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS)
- Mass Spectrometry and Tandem Mass Spectrometry
- Organic residues in lacustrin, fluvial and marine sites
- The long history of adhesive substances, from Prehistory to Middle Ages
- Plant resins
- Spot tests
Program
The work will start on June 14th afternoon and will finish on June 18th with lunch.
The school will run for five consecutive days with lectures and laboratory practice.
A detailed program will be available soon.
The official language of the school is English.
